Tableau
Bring your business data together in Tableau, and act on it in the apps your team already uses.
14 ways to read, 6 ways to write, each write switched on by you.
Quality checks
Built and tested with example responses.
- Ready to connect: doneEvery listed action is built in.
- Built and tested with example responses: doneEach action is built from the provider’s published API and tested against example responses, errors, rate limits and paging.
Connected, approved, proven.
The things teams do most with Tableau, an example flow with a person in the loop, and what Nexra keeps as proof.
Top actions
- Refresh a data source now
datasource_refreshes.createApproval by rule - Run a scheduled refresh now
extract_refresh_task_runs.createApproval by rule - List a data source's connections
datasource_connections.listRead
Example flow
- Tableau · List a data source's connections
datasource_connections.listDone - Tableau · Refresh a data source now
datasource_refreshes.createMaker-checker - Nexra · Record the decision and result in the evidence chainProven
Example workflow. Routine runs go through on their own. Only a change your rules flag, such as one over a limit you set, waits for the right person, who sees the exact change and the rule before it reaches Tableau.
What gets logged
- Whether it ran on its own or who approved it, and under which rule
- A fingerprint of the exact request sent to Tableau
- Tableau's reply: what it created or changed
- One entry in the evidence chain, linked to the one before
Try this in the sandbox
Run the whole flow with test data in your sandbox, then connect your own account when you are ready to go live.
For developers
Technical detail
Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server: list workbooks, views, data sources and flows, download a view's data as CSV, refresh extracts on demand and follow the jobs.

What you can map
Reads are always available. Writes are off until you switch them on for a connection, and governed writes follow your policies.
datasource connections1
- List a data source's connectionsSource
Lists the databases and files a data source connects to (server, port, type and database user; never passwords).
datasource refreshes1
- Refresh a data source nowDestinationNot retried automaticallyApproval before production
Starts an extract refresh of a published data source right away and returns the job to follow.
datasource tags1
- Tag a data sourceDestinationProvider duplicate protectionApproval before production
Adds tags to a data source. Tags it already has are kept and not duplicated; nothing is removed.
datasources2
- Get a data sourceSource
Reads one published data source, including whether it holds an extract.
- List published data sourcesSourceIncremental
Lists the published data sources on your Tableau site, oldest change first, for example to find extracts to refresh.
extract refresh task runs1
- Run a scheduled refresh nowDestinationNot retried automaticallyApproval before production
Runs a scheduled extract refresh task immediately, outside its schedule, and returns the job to follow.
extract refresh tasks1
- List scheduled extract refreshesSource
Lists the scheduled extract refresh tasks on your site, with their schedule, next run and failures in a row.
flows1
- List Prep flowsSourceIncremental
Lists the Tableau Prep flows on your site.
jobs2
- Get a jobSource
Reads one job's progress and result, for example to confirm a refresh Nexra started has finished.
- List background jobsSourceIncremental
Lists extract refreshes, flow runs and other background jobs with their status, for example to check last night's refreshes.
projects1
- List projectsSourceIncremental
Lists the projects (folders) on your Tableau site.
users1
- List site usersSource
Lists the people on your Tableau site with their role and last sign-in (read only).
view data1
- Download a view's data as CSVSource
Saves the data behind a sheet as a CSV file in Nexra, optionally filtered by the view's fields, for example to load a report's numbers into another system.
view tags1
- Tag a viewDestinationProvider duplicate protectionApproval before production
Adds tags to a view. Tags it already has are kept and not duplicated; nothing is removed.
views1
- List viewsSource
Lists the sheets and dashboards (views) on your Tableau site, optionally with how often each was opened.
workbook connections1
- List a workbook's data connectionsSource
Lists the databases and files a workbook connects to (server, port, type and database user; never passwords).
workbook refreshes1
- Refresh a workbook nowDestinationNot retried automaticallyApproval before production
Starts an extract refresh of a workbook's embedded extracts right away and returns the job to follow.
workbook tags1
- Tag a workbookDestinationProvider duplicate protectionApproval before production
Adds tags to a workbook. Tags it already has are kept and not duplicated; nothing is removed.
workbooks2
- Get a workbookSource
Reads one workbook with its project, owner, tags and views.
- List workbooksSourceIncremental
Lists workbooks on your Tableau site, oldest change first, for example to catalogue reports or pick up ones changed since the last run.
Access and limits
- Authentication
- Tableau personal access token
- Plans and access
- Tableau Cloud (any edition) or Tableau Server 2023.3 or later. Personal access tokens must be turned on for the site. Calls run as the person who owns the personal access token and see only what that person may see. Listing jobs and users needs a site administrator.
- Test environment
- Tableau has no separate sandbox. Use a test site, or a Tableau Cloud trial or the free Tableau Developer Program site, with sample workbooks.
- Rate limits
- Tableau Cloud has no published per-call REST limit but rejects requests at peak load, allows 20 long-running view-data downloads at once, and caps concurrent extract refreshes and daily backgrounder hours by edition. Nexra waits on 429 and never repeats a refresh.
- Pagination
- pageSize (up to 1,000) and pageNumber, until pagination.totalAvailable is reached.
- Provider events
- Tableau Cloud and Server send webhooks (for example DatasourceRefreshSucceeded and WorkbookRefreshFailed) to a URL an administrator registers through the REST API; deliveries are not signed. Flows run on demand, on a schedule, or when a scheduled check finds new or changed records.
Before you build a flow
- Intentionally excluded: publishing, downloading, moving or deleting workbooks, data sources and flows; permissions; user and group management; schedules; webhooks; site settings; removing tags; cancelling jobs.
- Refreshes have no idempotency key, so an uncertain refresh is never repeated; follow it with 'Get a job'.
- Tableau Cloud allows one session per personal access token: if another tool or a second Nexra connection signs in with the same token, the first session ends. Nexra signs in again once on a 401, so give Nexra its own token.
- Personal access tokens expire after 15 days without use and at the site's maximum lifetime; create a new one and update the connection when that happens.
- Calls use REST API 3.21, so Tableau Server must be 2023.3 or later. Incremental extract refreshes (API 3.28) are not offered.
- The Site ID must be set on the connection because every Tableau site method needs it; the connection test shows it.
- View data is saved as a CSV file (up to 100 MB) rather than returned as rows; a dashboard returns its first sheet only.
- Jobs and users lists need a site administrator's token; other people see only their own tasks.
- Connected-app (JWT) sign-in is not offered yet.
Developer reference
- Create the Salesforce credentials described above with the narrowest permissions your flows need.
- In Nexra, open Connect, then Connections, then New connection, choose Tableau, enter its settings and credentials, and tick only the write actions you need. Connection guide
- Test the connection, then use its actions as flow sources and destinations. Flow guide
